I was turned on to Live Journal by a short time online acquaintance. I have participated on IRC for a number of years, initially using it because I thought that it would enable me to find people that would be intellectually stimulating. I found over the years, that while the tech support channels are really handy, the politics, religion, and discussion type channels were not what I was looking for.
I tend to like to have exchanges of short essays, instead of the word and sentence exchanges that I find were more common on IRC. My initial reaction is that the Live Journal type concept that combines the ability to post essays, and the ability to track and meet "friends" will be a fantastic mechanism.
I am not looking to argue with people but to meet others to exchange ideas. I am not adverse to a discussion or what some call "debate", but I tend not to want to spend time trying to convince any particular person they should do X or change Y. While I might talk about what "people" should do, I an not interested in telling you what "YOU" should do. And I mean that in the sense that, for example, the nation may be better if it encouraged the education and valued science, I am not here to convince YOU that you should be a scientist. If that clarification makes sense. If it does not, feel free to read my posts, and introduce yourself to me, so that I can read your posts, and perhaps we can get to know each other, and over time you will understand what I mean when I talk about making recommendations for society rather than individuals. And we might find that we just generally enjoy exchanging ideas.
I prefer to put my ideas out there, listen to others ideas, and perhaps ask clarifying questions, and then get inspire to a new topic or essay exchange.
Long before there were public blogs I created a website called webulite.com, where over time, I began to create buckets or sub pages to try to break the site up to meet people and have conversations in the 4 areas that I generally thing of as interesting; Arts, Science, Politics & Religion.
I look forward to using LiveJournal to meet a variety of "Friends", with which to discuss things, and possibly even become more educated and wise.
Cheers! Ricco
